Hazard assessments are to be conducted prior to starting work on a new project or in an unfamiliar way to identify potential hazards. The application of controls is the responsibility of the crew listed above.

CLEARANCE DISTANCE *

Required when “Inspect and use personal fall protection” is selected under Working at Heights.

Clearance reminder:

Clearance distance must be confirmed at the worksite before tying off.
Workers must ensure there is enough clearance to prevent contact with the ground, lower level, floor, material, equipment, or other obstruction.
Lanyard length, shock absorber deployment, worker height, anchor location, swing fall, and harness stretch must be considered before work begins.

FALL PROTECTION PLAN - WORKING AT HEIGHTS / FRAMING

FALL HAZARDS
- Fall from roof edges, roof openings, roof access hatch, truss areas, and sloped roof surfaces.
- Fall from second floor deck, stair openings, floor openings, wall openings, and unprotected edges.
- Fall while entering, exiting, or working from a telehandler man cage.
- Slip/trip hazards caused by weather, loose material, sawdust, ice, mud, wind, and changing site conditions.

FALL PROTECTION SYSTEMS TO BE USED
- Guardrails will be used on the second floor where practical, including open edges, floor openings, and stairwell openings.
- Workers will use personal fall arrest or travel restraint when working on the roof, where exposed to a roof fall hazard, or when working from a telehandler man cage.
- Workers will maintain a safe distance from unprotected edges where applicable and will not work outside protected areas unless tied off.
- Ladders, access points, and work areas will be kept clear and stable before use.

ANCHORS TO BE USED
- Roof anchors, temporary anchor straps, engineered anchor points, or manufacturer-approved anchor points will be installed and used as required.
- Anchors must be installed according to manufacturer specifications and inspected before use.
- Telehandler/man cage anchor points must only be used where approved by the manufacturer and the equipment is suitable for the task.
- Improvised anchors are not to be used unless confirmed suitable by a competent person and allowed by the applicable manufacturer/instructions.

CLEARANCE DISTANCE

PROCEDURE
1. Review the work area before starting. Identify roof edges, second floor openings, stair openings, floor openings, wall openings, and other fall hazards.
2. Install and inspect guardrails on the second floor where required and practical. Do not remove guardrails unless another approved form of fall protection is in place.
3. Workers accessing the roof must be tied off before exposure to the fall hazard. Use proper roof anchors or approved anchor points.
4. Workers in a telehandler man cage must tie off to the approved anchor point in the basket/man cage when required.
5. Inspect harnesses, lanyards, lifelines, anchors, guardrails, ladders, and access points before use. Defective equipment must be removed from service.
6. Keep work areas clear of debris, loose material, ice, snow, mud, and tripping hazards.
7. Do not work at heights during unsafe wind, ice, lightning, or other hazardous weather conditions.
8. Maintain communication between workers on the roof, workers on the floor below, and the equipment operator if equipment is used.
9. Do not work alone when fall arrest rescue may be required.

RESCUE PLAN
- Stop work immediately and call for help. Call 911 if there is injury, uncertainty about the worker's condition, or rescue cannot be completed immediately and safely.
- Keep the fallen worker in sight and maintain communication if possible. Do not allow additional workers to become exposed to fall hazards during the rescue.
- A competent worker/equipment operator may use the all-terrain forklift/telehandler to access and lower the suspended worker only if site conditions allow safe equipment access, ground conditions are suitable, the equipment can be positioned safely, and the worker can be reached without creating additional hazards.
- If the all-terrain forklift/telehandler cannot safely access the area, an extension ladder may be used to reach and assist the fallen worker, provided the ladder can be set up on stable ground, at a safe angle, and secured or held by another worker.
- If immediate rescue cannot be safely completed by site workers, keep the worker as calm and still as possible and wait for emergency services.
- After any fall arrest event, remove the involved harness, lanyard, lifeline, anchor, and related equipment from service until inspected and cleared or replaced.
- Report the incident to the supervisor and complete required documentation before work resumes.
